There are two different things you can be buying in this category, and confusing them is how people end up disappointed. Some platforms sell access - without paying you cannot start a conversation. Others sell reach - the conversations are free, and money buys more visibility.
Free enough already
OkCupid, Bumble and Hinge all let a free account browse, match and message. If your city has a reasonable user base, you can run a complete dating attempt on any of them without paying. What money buys is being seen by more people, seeing who liked you, and undoing mistakes.
That means the honest first step on all three is to use them free for a few weeks. If nothing happens, paying to be seen more often by the same small pool rarely fixes it.
Paying for access
Match, eharmony and EliteSingles gate messaging behind a subscription. Their argument is that a paywall filters for seriousness, and there is something to that - people who paid tend to reply. The cost is that you commit before you know whether anyone near you is on it.

Never buy the longest plan first
The per-month price always falls with the term, which is exactly why long plans are where cancellation complaints concentrate. Buy the shortest period available, find out whether the platform has anyone on it near you, and extend only if the answer is yes.
The question to ask before paying anything
Not "is this platform good" but "is this platform populated where I live". Every service on this list works in a dense city and struggles in a small town, and no subscription changes that. Use a free account first to answer it - and where a platform will not let you, treat the shortest paid term as the cost of finding out.
