What eharmony tells you before you register

eharmony is the one platform here that describes its free tier in plain words on its own site: Basic Membership lets you take the compatibility quiz, view profiles and send initial likes. What it does not publish is the price of the paid membership that makes any of it useful.

What the free account does

Shows you matches you cannot talk to. You answer a long questionnaire, the system produces people, and the messages stop at the paywall. The questionnaire is the product's hook and the reason the paywall lands where it does - by the time you hit it, you have invested half an hour.

eharmony is one of only two platforms on this list that gates matching behind a quiz rather than beside it - how all eight platforms disclose, or don't disclose, their own matching method is set out here.

How it bills you

Auto-renewing subscription. This is the model where the exit matters more than the entry, and eharmony's written reviews show why.

What people who paid actually say

Aggregate 4.1 from 48,667 ratings. The most recent 147 written reviews average 1.5, with 77% at one star - and they carry the single most lopsided complaint pattern we found anywhere.

RatingCountShare
1 star11377%
2 stars128%
3 stars107%
4 stars43%
5 stars85%

65% of them mention money - charges, refunds, subscriptions, value. That is nearly two in three, and roughly double the billing complaint rate of Bumble or Match. Whatever else is true of eharmony, its users write about the bill more than about the dating.

IanL3 - 1 star

"I paid for the subscription and almost immediately ran out of people within 60 miles of me. A lot of blank profiles. No conversations or any activity on the app. Reached out to support and never heard back."

Reaching out and hearing nothing back is not a one-off here either; the same silence shows up in reviews for other platforms on this list.

appalatchunwildflower - 1 star

"So, so bad. From the personality profile to the potential matches, just yikes. Wish I had not paid for this - such a waste of money and time."

Jamee Dandy - 2 stars

"Lots of catfishers, scammers, etc. old profiles that do not get deleted. I don't know why they don't just make it you must be verified for all users to have a safe experience."

Where it lands

Eighth. It scores better than most on telling you what the free tier does, and worse than almost anyone on what happens after you pay. The pattern in the reviews - subscribe, run out of local matches quickly, struggle to get a refund - repeats too consistently to dismiss as noise.

Check how many active people are within your radius before committing to a term longer than a month. The questionnaire will not tell you that, and neither will the free tier.

eharmony sells structured, long-term matching harder than anyone here, so if that is your goal our ranking of the best dating sites for serious relationships explains why the platforms that advertise commitment most score lowest on what you can verify before paying.

Every verdict here, eharmony included, is written and scored by the same reviewer, who runs identical billing, free-tier and exit checks across all eight platforms.

eharmony's auto-renewing billing and thin free tier are not unique to this platform - the same pattern across all eight is broken down post by post in our editors' notes that track each platform the same way this review does.

Questions

Is eharmony free?

There is a free Basic Membership - the compatibility quiz, viewing profiles, sending and receiving initial likes. Messaging requires a paid subscription. Checked 10 September 2026.

Does eharmony publish its prices?

No. The free tier is described on the site; the cost of the paid membership is not.

What do eharmony users complain about?

Money, overwhelmingly. 65% of the most recent 147 written App Store reviews mention charges, refunds, subscriptions or value - roughly double the rate for Bumble or Match.

Is eharmony worth paying for?

The recurring pattern in written reviews is subscribing and then running out of active matches nearby. Check the size of your local pool before buying anything longer than the shortest term.
