Judge the billing, not the photos. A platform that hides its price until you have registered, charges per message rather than per month, and makes cancellation hard is built to earn from your time rather than your outcome. That is the pattern that produces complaints - with or without fake profiles.
Almost every guide to this question tells you to look for suspiciously attractive profiles and broken English. That advice is not wrong, but it is downstream. The reliable signal is structural, and you can read it before you create an account.
Signal one: you cannot see a price
We checked eight platforms. Six publish no price anywhere on their own website - you find out after registering, and often the figure varies by age, location and the device you signed up on. This is normal in the category rather than proof of bad faith, but it inverts the usual buying relationship: you hand over personal details to find out the cost.
Treat an unpublished price as a reason to give the minimum information possible until you see one.
Signal two: you pay per message, not per month
Subscription and credit models create opposite incentives. With a subscription, a platform that matches you quickly keeps a happy customer. With credits, every additional message is revenue - so a conversation that never quite arrives anywhere is worth more than one that succeeds.
This does not make credit platforms fraudulent, and some are perfectly straightforward. It does mean your spending is unpredictable and that the operator's interests and yours point in different directions. Set a hard budget before your first message, not after.
Signal three: attention arrives too fast
If messages from striking profiles begin within minutes of registering, before you have a photo or a filled-in profile, something is generating that traffic. On a genuine platform interest builds slowly and correlates with what you have written.

What is not a reliable signal
A foreign-registered company is not evidence of fraud - much of this industry is registered offshore for ordinary tax reasons. Nor is a small user base, nor an unfamiliar brand. And a verification badge means the person matches their photos, not that they are who they say - no consumer platform performs identity verification in the legal sense.
If you have already been charged
Dispute through your bank or card provider before arguing with the platform, and do it promptly - card scheme chargeback windows are measured in weeks. Save the checkout screen, the terms as they appeared to you, and any cancellation attempt. In the US, complaints about billing practices go to the FTC; elsewhere, to your national consumer protection body.
